The Abbey of Saint Peter-Muenster (Lat. Abbatia Sancti Petri apud Muenster ; English St. Peter's Abbey ) is a monastery of the Benedictine order in Muenster , Saskatchewan , Canada . It is the oldest monastery in Canada. The abbey belongs to the American-Cassinese Benedictine Congregation .

history

In 1892 the Benedictine Archabbey of St. Vincent (Saint Vincent Archabbey), Latrobe , Pennsylvania , USA founded the Cluny Priory in Wetaug , Illinois . The first prior was Oswald Moosmueller . His successor, Alfred Mayer, appointed by the Roman Curia , moved the seat from the USA to Saskatchewan in Canada with the permission of the local Bishop of Prince Albert Albert Pascal OMI. In 1903 the first Benedictine monks settled in Muenster, initially in wooden huts. The first abbot Bruno Doerfler had the first abbey church built in 1910, which was completed in 1919 with a dome painting by Berthold Imhoff ; In 1911 the monastery was elevated to an abbey . In 1914 a monastery of the Ursulines from Germany was established. Pope Benedict XV Elevated the Benedictine monastery with the surrounding area in 1921 to Abbatia nullius (Private Abbey). In the same year St. Peter's College was established under Abbot Michael Ott , which became a high school in 1972 , later part of the University of Saskatchewan . Abbot Jerome Ferdinand Weber had the monastery expanded and rebuilt in 1962; In 1989 a new monastery church was consecrated.

status

Saint Peter-Muenster was a territorial abbey from 1921 to 1998 , a bishopric- like Roman Catholic church , the territory of which was added to the diocese of Saskatoon in 1998 . Since then, St. Peter-Muenster has been a normal abbey again.
