Tetragonopterus is a genus of freshwater fish from the family of the true tetras (Characidae). The genus occurs with 14 species in almost all of South America (not west of the Andes and south of the catchment area of the Río Paraná ). Two species are widespread, one only occurs in the Corantijn in Suriname .
features
Tetragonopterus have a short, tall body that is strongly flattened on the sides. They are eleven to twelve centimeters long. The tooth-bearing intermaxillary bone (premaxillary) in the upper jaw is covered with an outer row of small uniform teeth and an inner row of multi-pointed teeth. The front part of the maxillaries is also dentate. The sideline begins behind the head at the level of the upper gill cover , then drops quickly in a curve and then runs below the body center line in an arc to the tail fin stalk.
Systematics
Tetragonopterus belongs to the family of the real tetra and is the only remaining genus of the once generic subfamily Tetragonopterinae.
