Tetramethyltetraselenofulvalene (TMTSF) is a chemical compound from the group of organoselenium compounds and heterofulvalene .

Manufacturing

Tetramethyltetraselenafulvalene can by the substitution of the hydrogen atoms of the Tetraselenafulvalens by methyl groups are obtained.

Superconductivity

Tetramethyltetraselenofulvalene salts of the (TMTSF) 2 X type (with X = single negatively charged anion) have a high electrical conductivity, the hexafluorophosphate from TMTSF was the first organic superconductor ( Bechgaard salt ). This salt only becomes superconducting at high pressure (12 kbar at 0.9 Kelvin ). The perchlorate (TMTSF) 2 ClO 4, on the other hand, becomes superconducting at 1.2 K even at normal pressure. In the conductive complexes, the organic cations are stacked like a sandwich.
