Tettauer Schanze

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tettauer Schanze was a fortification built in 1485 and existed until 1490 near Ernsthofen an der Enns .

In the armed conflicts between Emperor Friedrich III. and the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus in 1481/82, Hungarian mercenaries penetrated across the Enns and even oppressed the St. Florian monastery . In 1485 a department moved into position in Ernsthofen and built a fortification next to a bridge on both banks of the Enns, which was named after their mercenary leader Wilhelm von Tettau. Wilhelm von Tettau was involved in the siege of Hainburg as early as 1482 , where he was captured and later released. He also took part in the siege of Wiener Neustadt in 1486/87.

From the Tettauer Schanze the Hungarians plundered Steyr and the area as far as St. Florian . Due to the death of Corvinius in 1490, the Hungarian occupation could only hold out until October of that year, when they had to give way to a contingent of Governor Gotthard von Starhemberg .

There are no more remains of the system to be found today; it is believed to be in the area of the Winkling district.
