prehistory

In the early 1970s, Stevie Ray Vaughan and his brother Jimmie Vaughan , who by then had already achieved fame as the guitarist of the Fabulous Thunderbirds , moved from Dallas to Austin within the state of Texas , where they hoped for greater chances of success.

In 1982 Stevie Ray Vaughan and his band Double Trouble got the chance to play at the famous Montreux Jazz Festival , as the first band without a record deal. Although they reaped from the audience for their loud Texas blues boos, David Bowie , who was also present, was enthusiastic about Vaughan's talent and hired him for his next album Let's Dance . Jackson Browne , who had also seen the Montreux show, offered the band to use their private studio for three days free of charge.

success

The ten recorded songs were sent to the music producer John Hammond , who had already promoted musicians like Bob Dylan , Aretha Franklin and George Benson . He organized a contract with Epic Records for the band . The recordings were reshuffled and released as an album. On June 3, 1983, Texas Flood reached number 38 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold more than 500,000 copies.

The album has been available as download content for the video game Rock Band 2 since March 2008 except for the titles Tin Pan Alley and Wham .

The most important songs

Pride and Joy is probably Stevie Ray Vaughan's most famous original composition. It is a typical Texas blues shuffle in E flat major, played with Stevie Ray Vaughan's tuning of his guitar by a semitone lower (E-A-A-D-B-E).

Texas Flood , written around 1955 by Larry Davis, also ascribed to arranger and trumpeter Joe Scott, was made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughan and remained an integral part of his live appearances until his death. It is in 12/8 time and sounds in G major (due to the guitar tuning being a semitone lower).

Lenny is the last track on the original recording. Vaughan's wife, Lenora, bought him a repainted 1965 Fender Stratocaster with a rosewood fingerboard in 1980 , which Vaughan liked so much that he named it “Lenny” after his wife's name. According to Lenora, he wrote the song Lenny that same night . He recorded this, as did the piece Riviera Paradise from his album In Step , on which the guitar “Lenny” was recorded (whose neck he had meanwhile exchanged for one with a maple fingerboard). The guitar manufacturer Fender made a limited number of copies of "Lenny" in 2007. The original guitar sold for $ 629,500 in 2004.
