That Good Night is a British-Portuguese drama directed by Eric Styles that premiered on June 22, 2017 at the Edinburgh International Film Festival .

Portugal. Ralph was once a famous writer. Now he is around 70, terminally ill and does not want to be a burden to his wife Anna. Ralph also wants to reconcile with his son Michael before he dies. When Michael visits him in his villa, a mysterious visitor passes by who is supposed to end Ralph's life painlessly, but the man in the linen suit is only playing a game with them.

Literary background

The film is based on a play by NJ Crisp , who wrote it for Donald Sinden and his son Marc Sinden in the central roles. The play premiered on April 2, 1996 at the Yvonne Arnaud Theater in Guildford, England.

Welsh filmmaker Eric Styles directed it , while Charles Savage adapted Crisp's play for the film, who co-produced the film with Alan Latham . Latham said: “ That Good Night is a passion project of mine and I'm very proud to bring NJ Crisp's stage play, that I produced 20 years ago, to the big screen. John Hurt is one of Britain's finest actors, and we're delighted to have him on board in bringing this touching story to life. "

A large part of the film was shot in Loulé , on the Portuguese Algarve

John Hurt plays the sick writer Ralph in the film. It was Hurt's last film role. Hurt said: "I am very much looking forward to putting all the jigsaw pieces together that make up this fascinating and paradoxical character." Erin Richards took on the role of Cassie, Charles Dance plays the mysterious visitor. Sofia Helin took on the role of Ralph's wife Anna, Max Brown that of his son Michael. Joana Santos can be seen in the role of Joana. Loulé residents could apply for extras.

Filming began on April 4, 2016 and took place over five weeks in the Portuguese Algarve, in the municipality of Loulé on the coast, in the old town there, in the small village of Monte Seco and in Tavira. Further filming took place in Yorkshire, England.

The score was composed by Guy Farley . The soundtrack for the film was to be released in 2018.

From May 21, 2017, Red Rock Entertainment presented the film in Cannes , where actress Joana Santos and the producers showed some scenes from it. The film premiered on June 22, 2017 at the Edinburgh International Film Festival .

Reviews

Eye For Film's Andrew Robertson says that despite some of the film's weaknesses, John Hurt's acting is overwhelming, and That Good Night is a fitting tribute to a great actor.
