action

Two salespeople from a lubricants company from Chicago, the aggressive cynic Larry Mann and the worn-out, tired of life Phil Cooper, meet up with fellow Baptist Bob Walker, who works in another department , in Wichita , Province , where they are attending a conference . They hold conversations about personal matters in a dreary hotel suite. Now and then one of them leaves the room and the other two talk more openly.
In the evening there is a party in the hotel. The two older are waiting for a potential major customer named Fuller, whom Larry describes as The Big Kahuna , but whose appearance they do not know. Larry is on the verge of a nervous breakdown because he believes that he has missed the supposed solution to all of his problems. Back in the suite, it turns out that Bob of all people spoke to Fuller without knowing it, but about dogs and religion. Because he got Fuller's card, the others send him off to arrange the deal, they stay behind and have an existentialist conversation, their desperation about their lives becomes more and more apparent. Bob comes back, has also talked to Fuller, but only about religion, not lubricants, he said he would have found that too shabby. Larry is stunned with anger and goes to bed. Phil tells Bob in a very calm way why he behaved self-righteously and wrongly and it is precisely with this calm that he gets him to see his arrogance, the end is open.
