The Brute Chorus was an English band from London . Their music had elements of blues, rockabilly, pop and folk. In 2010 the world described the style of music in a concert review as "Fuck-Blues", referring to a term that was first used by the Swiss music blog "78s".

history

The band members met long before the band was founded. Nick Foot and Matthew Day went to school together in Egremont, Cumbria . Nick later met James Steel at Rose Bruford College in London and together with another fellow student, Andrew Holt, the four formed the band Low Sparks. There were a few small-run releases and the band won a band competition.

In 2007 there was a line-up change, bassist Andrew Holt left the band and Dave Ferrett, previously keyboardist with Scritti Politti , took over bass. Since the band also changed their music style a bit, they decided to rename it, so The Brute Chorus was born. The first single under this name was released in late 2007 as the first signing on the Bumpman label , a re-establishment of the Hawley Arms pub in London, where the band performed regularly at the time.

In 2008 The Brute Chorus played a concert at the Glastonbury Festival on the BBC Introducing Stage.

The first, self-titled album was released in 2009 and was produced by Victor Van Vugt and Choque Hosein. The album is a recording of a concert, it was completely recorded in one evening in front of 300 fans in the London Roundhouse in Camden . The band rehearsed for this gig for five weeks. The English online music magazine Drowned In Sound gave the album 7 out of 10 possible points.

In spring 2010 The Brute Chorus went on tour in Germany for the first time, they played support for the English band The Woodentops.

The second album "How The Caged Bird Sings" was released in autumn 2010 and was again produced by Choque Hosein. It was recorded in February, at a community center in the Lake District , where unfortunately the heating system broke shortly before and the band struggled with the cold throughout the recording time. The English magazine Artrocker gave the album 4 out of 5 possible points. It has been described as “weird” and “addictive” (addictive). Singer James Steel explains the difference between the two albums in an interview on the blog of the radio show Toast On Fire at FSK (Free Station Combine) as follows: "The songs are a little darker now and we've learned a lot about using space in music . The first album is very full on and loud from start to finish whereas this new one take's it's time. " (The songs are now a little darker than before and we have learned a lot how to better use the space in the music. The first album is immediately 100% full until the end, while the new album is just developing and takes a lot more time leaves). The artwork for the album and the released singles was designed by the well-known tattoo artist Mo Coppoletta. There were several remixes for the singles, including by James Yuill . There was a lot of airplay. A. at ByteFM , on NDR Info in the program of Paul Baskerville and at FSK .

In the summer of 2011 Matt Day left The Brute Chorus and Mark Austin joined the band as the new drummer. After the band worked on new material, the first tour through the USA followed in spring 2012 with performances at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas . The trip was funded in part by the Indiegogo crowdfunding website . At the same time, the single "My Testament" was released, which was free to download from their website. The Swiss Tages-Anzeiger made the single "Song Of The Day" on April 4th.

In August 2013 the band broke up.
