The Enigma (actually Paul Lawrence ) is an American musician with the band Human Marvels and performance artist from Seattle . His media presence made him one of the most famous supporters of the Modern Primitive movement.

The Enigma studied music for 13 years and was a founding member of the Jim Rose Circus, which toured worldwide between 1992 and 1998. He appeared with Mike Patton , Jane Wiedlin , Karen Black and Katzen in the 2004 film Firecracker by Steve Balderson , which was released on DVD on July 4, 2006. In the X-Files series he played the mystery man in the episode entitled Humbug (German title: The Circus ). Under the name The Conundrum , as it was in the original US version, a toy figure was then produced after him in 2005 as part of the X-Files PALz series of figures by the Palisades Toy company .

The Enigma has undergone several body modifications . This includes implanted horns and a full body tattoo made from puzzle pieces. He also had his auricles cut out by cutting out segments of cartilage into a shape similar to that of puzzle pieces. He began with his tattoos on December 20, 1992. They were carried out in part by his former wife and band member Katzen the Tiger Lady , who also wears a full body tattoo. In total, over 200 tattoo artists worked on his body.
