Dalip Singh Rana (born August 27, 1972 in Dhirana , Himachal Pradesh ), better known by his ring name The Great Khali , is an Indian bodybuilder , boxer , wrestler and actor . He was most recently under contract with the wrestling organization WWE .

He works for the Punjabi Police, where he is officially released from duty for health reasons.

His greatest success in wrestling so far was receiving the World Heavyweight Champion title . Singh's extraordinary stature also earned him several roles in movies.

Private life

Singh was selected for an athletic scholarship by the Jalandhar Police at the age of 22. Here he became a successful boxer and bodybuilder . In 2000, with the support of his family and employer, he moved to the United States . Despite his new residence, Singh is still a police officer. He has been married to Harminder Kaur since 2002.

Wrestling career

All Pro Wrestling (2000-2001)

In the United States he joined the League All Pro Wrestling in 2000. On May 28, 2001, he performed a so-called flapjack on Brian Ong during a training session . Ong was fatally injured in this action because he moved incorrectly and had suffered a concussion before the action. Ong's family received $ 1.3 million in compensation from the APW. The League was blamed for the incident because Ong was not instructed to undergo a medical examination. Singh was not found guilty.

New Japan Pro Wrestling (2001-2002)

In August 2001, Singh moved to Japan for New Japan Pro Wrestling . There he formed a day team with “Giant Silva”. He stayed with NJPW until January 2002.

World Wrestling Entertainment (2006-2014)

In March 2006, Singh signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment and joined the development league Deep South Wrestling for further development .

On April 7th, Singh made his debut as The Great Khali on SmackDown! . Daivari acted as manager. He had his first SmackDown match on April 21, 2006, in which he was able to defeat Funaki .

As a result, the roles were swapped between Singh and Daivari, in which Daivari now competed, while Singh acted as a mixture of bodyguard and manager. Singh was later involved in a brief feud against Tommy Dreamer . Another roster change followed.

On January 8, 2007, Singh was presented as a new signing at RAW and made his debut in a fight against John Cena , which he was allowed to win. Dave Kapoor (Ranjin Singh) acted as the manager of Singh in front of the cameras, but is actually the booker .

On July 20, 2007, SmackDown! Edition, Singh was able to win a Battle Royal for the vacant World Heavyweight title , as the reigning champion Edge had to give it up due to a chest muscle injury. After a few successful defenses, he had to lose his title to Batista after almost two months at the PPV Unforgiven . After a brief feuding program with Big Show , Singh was only used sporadically. In early 2010, Singh briefly tagged with Matt Hardy .

In the 2010 WWE Draft, he switched to Monday Night RAW, but went back to SmackDown on April 26, 2011 through the WWE Draft. After a few brief feuds, he paused from the beginning of October 2011 until the Royal Rumble on January 29, 2012, where he returned.

On July 26, 2012, a tumor was removed from his pituitary gland .

On November 14, 2014, he was released from the WWE.

Continental Wrestling Entertainment (since 2015)

On November 24, 2015, Singh opened his own wrestling school and promotion Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE) in India .

Return to WWE (since 2017)

On July 24, 2017, Singh intervened at the Battleground PPV in the Punjabi Prison Match between Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship and helped the latter to defend his title. He also competed in the Greatest Royal Rumble in 2018 in the match of the same name.

Outside of wrestling

Singh was Mr. India in bodybuilding in 1997 and 1998. He has also appeared in various films. In 2005 he played the role of "Turley" in the feature film Spiel ohne Regel ( Game Without Rules) , in 2008 he was "Dalip" in the film Get Smart and another time "Khali" in the Indian film Kushti . He also worked in the French film In the footsteps of Marsupilami .
