International Theater Institute

The International Theater Institute (ITI), French Institut international du théâtre , English International Theater Institute , is a global, international theater network that has been serving the mutual exchange of theater professionals and better understanding of cultures since 1948 under the umbrella of UNESCO . It is currently represented by national centers in 86 countries. The ITI General Secretariat is based in Paris and Shanghai .

Mohammed Saif Al-Afkham (Fujairah / UAE) has been president of the organization since 2014 . From Germany had Ivan Nagel (1977-1979) and Manfred Beilharz (from 2002 to 2008) held the office. Tobias Biancone (Switzerland) is the general director.

The (previously only West) German section of the International Theater Institute is a registered non-profit association that was founded in 1955 as the German section of the ITI in Bonn. The first president was Carl Ebert . The German Center has been an active member of the international network since 1957. In 1959, the GDR center was founded and also incorporated into the ITI. The first president of the GDR center was Wolfgang Langhoff . Both German centers worked in parallel in the ITI until 1991.

In 1991, after German reunification, through the election of GDR theater people, it was merged with the GDR center. Today around 200 theater artists - artistic directors, directors, choreographers and journalists - as well as representatives of associations and institutions from all areas of the performing arts are members of the Center for the Federal Republic of Germany of the International Theater Institute. Working method and projects

The German center realizes its own projects and participates in cooperation projects within the world association. The Theater der Welt festival , which is held every three years in a different German city, is the project of the German ITI center that is outstanding in terms of scope and signal effect.

The German ITI develops its own projects in the field of international contemporary theater, dance and music theater. It sees itself - together with its permanent project Mime Centrum Berlin - as an information and documentation center for the performing arts in Germany. Since 2013, the ITI has been sponsoring the “Change of Scenes” program together with the Robert Bosch Foundation . Further projects are being developed in the areas of cultural education, cultural heritage, and cultural and creative industries.

The German ITI Center supports the work of the ITI's international committees on project trips and work meetings, such as the international meeting on contemporary music theater "Music Theater Now" by the Music Theater Committee and the workshop series "My Unknown Enemy" by the Cultural Identity and Development Committee. The Center for Theater in Conflict Zones in Khartoum / Sudan - in cooperation with ITI Sudan - was founded in 2006 as an essential stage of the projects on theater in conflict areas. The project series “Motion Detectors”, which combines choreographic research, workshops and theater projects on questions of democracy and control in public space, culminated in the artistic project “Escalators” at “Theater der Welt” in 2008. The ITI project at “Theater der Welt” in 2010 was dedicated to intergenerational theater work and in 2014 to the preservation and development of archives of contemporary theater in Africa. The institute supports international exchange on a cultural and political level. It advises artists, organizers and producers as well as government institutions on questions of international cultural cooperation. Initiated by the BKM , the consulting portal “Touring Artists” has been operated together with the IGBK since 2013. The German center is represented in the international committees and in the executive council of the ITI and is actively involved in their projects to discuss and research the aesthetic and social contexts of theater. In emerging and transition countries, the German ITI also supports projects that focus on promoting exchange and consultancy.

On World Theater Day ( March 27 ), the German ITI Center has been honoring transnational theater work and exemplary achievements with its ITI Prize since 1984 .

Membership in other organizations

The German ITI center is represented in several European networks, such as the Informal European Theater Meeting (ietm), Culture Action Europe - European Forum for the Arts and Heritage and the European Network of Information Centers for the Performing Arts (ENICPA). It is also a member of the German UNESCO Commission (DUK), the nationwide Coalition Cultural Diversity, the German Cultural Council , the Performing Arts Fund and the Dramaturgical Society .

The ITI is financed from funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and from the Kulturstiftung der Länder (KSL) from funds from the State of Berlin and the community of states . Projects are also funded by the Federal Foreign Office and other domestic and foreign sponsors and project partners.
