The Man with the Beautiful Eyes is a 1999 British animated short film directed by Jonathan Hodgson .

action

Despite their parents' ban, four boys play on an overgrown property. It is overgrown with bamboo, has a pond with goldfish and a house whose shutters are always closed. One day, while the boys were at the house, an unshaven man with a cigarette and a whiskey bottle emerges from the house, but his eyes are beautiful and bright. He greets the children and disappears inside again. The children believe that their parents did not want them to see a maladjusted man. Some time later, the boys want to return to the property. But the house burned down, the goldfish pond is without water and the fish are dead. The bamboo is also burned. The children believe that the parents are responsible for the fires because they wanted to get rid of the man. They fear that in the future too, beauty and strength will be removed in this way.

production

The Man with the Beautiful Eyes is based on Charles Bukowski's poem of the same name from 1992, which is read by a narrator. Director Jonathan Hodgson worked closely with illustrator Jonny Hannah to transform the poem into animation . The animation was created in color on paper and on cels . The film ran on Channel 4 , among others, on whose behalf it was produced.

Awards

The Man with the Beautiful Eyes won the 2000 BAFTA in the Best Animated Short Film category . At the Dresden Film Festival in 2000 he received the main prize for the best animated film. In 2000 he was also nominated for the Cartoon d'Or of the European Cartoon Forum.
