The former home of the American writer Edith Wharton is listed as The Mount on the National Register of Historic Places . In November 1971, was presented Lenox in the state of Massachusetts of the United States standing building including a 40-hectare property as a National Historic Landmark recognized. Today it serves as a museum.
description
The property on which the house is located is connected to Plunkett Street by a gate. In the immediate vicinity there is a two-story gatehouse , the front porch of which has four columns of Doric order . The former stables follow after around 200 meters, and after another 300 meters you reach the main house, built in the style of Christopher Wren . Its external features include in particular the modified hipped roof , a centrally arranged dome and a platform on the roof between the four inner chimneys by means of a balustrade . The main entrance is on the west side of the building; a terraced garden borders on the east and south.
Historical meaning
The house was built for the Wharton family in 1901 or 1902, depending on the source. Until 1909 the Whartons lived there from June to December, then only irregularly; Edith Wharton finally sold the house in 1913 following their marriage divorce. After several changes of ownership, it was bought by the Foxhollow School for Girls in the 1940s , until it finally became the property of Edith Wharton Restoration, Inc. in the 1980s , which continues to maintain and operate the building to this day.
