House of Shadows (Original title: The Night Digger ) is a British thriller film from 1971 based on the novel Nest in a Fallen Tree by Joy Cowley . The screenplay was written by Roald Dahl , whose wife Patricia Neal also played a leading role. The Night Digger was the American title, the book was originally but in the UK as The Road Builder (dt .: The road builders published).

An old woman lives in a dilapidated villa on the outskirts of London. Maura Prince, who cares for her blind and domineering mother, leads a life of drudgery. In their rather unhappy life, Billy Jarvis, a handsome young man who rides a motorcycle and is looking for work as a do-it-yourselfer, enters. Jarvis soon makes himself very indispensable in the house, but his angelic features hide the traits that threaten the lives of both women.
synchronization
The synchronization came about in 1990. Here the then 89-year-old theater actress Annemarie Marks-Rocke was cast on Mrs. Edith Prince , because they wanted an authentic representation.

In a previous review, The New York Times wrote : “She begs for sympathy for her suffering, but despite the clear statements made by Patricia Neal, Roald Dahl, Pamela Brown and a young newcomer, Nicholas Clay, the credibility is far more remarkable than the emotion. As DVD Talk wrote, “The Night Digger doesn't have a great reputation, but I found it highly unusual and more than satisfying.” Cinema Retro called it an underrated gem and RadioTimes found the production fascinating .
