The Northern Road is an urban freeway to the west of Sydney in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales . It connects Narellan Road and Camden Valley Way in Narellan with Windsor Road , Hawkesbury Valley Way and Putty Road in Windsor . Together with the (shorter) Narellan Road, it forms an outer, western clasp around the greater Sydney area from Campbelltown to Windsor.

history

The four-lane road was opened in December 1998 and replaced State Road 69 on the same route. Together with the Southern Freeway (R1), Appin Road (S69), Narellan Road (Met-9) and Putty Road (S69), it forms a western bypass of Greater Sydney from Wollongong to Singleton .

course

In Narellan , The Northern Road is the continuation of Narellan Road (Met 9) to the northwest. At Luddenham branch off to the east on Elizabeth Drive towards Cecil Park (Sydney) and to the west on Park Road towards Wallacia . The Northern Road turns north. The Western Motorway (Met 4) crosses in South Penrith and immediately afterwards, in Kingswood , the parallel Great Western Highway (S44).

In Llandlo , The Northern Road turns northeast, while Londonderry Road continues north to Richmond . The road then forms the north-western boundary of the Castlereagh Nature Reserve , a state nature reserve. At Bligh Park it touches the western tip of the Windsor Downs Nature Reserve , another state nature reserve, the Blacktown Road (S63) branches off to the northwest towards Richmond and the Richmond Road (S63) to the southeast towards Oakhurst (Sydney).

A little later Windsor is reached. There the Hawkesbury Valley Way (S40) branches off to the west, towards Richmond. A few kilometers further on, The Northern Road ends at Windsor Road (Met 2 / S40) and its continuation, Putty Road (S69).

meaning

The Northern Road connects the Western Motorway, on which the Olympic site from 2000 is located further into town , with the International Regatta Center in Cranebrook .
