The Pyramid - Grave of Horror (Original title: The Pyramid ) is an American horror film from 2014. The direction was Grégory Levasseur. The main roles are played by Ashley Hinshaw , Denis O'Hare and James Buckley . The German theatrical release was on April 16, 2015.

action

In 2013, the archaeologists Dr. Holden and his daughter Nora in Egypt a tetrahedral pyramid . When they begin the excavation, a worker is injured by escaping mycotoxins . Because of a state crisis, the Egyptian government is also threatening to expel the archaeologists.

The television journalist Sunni Marsh, her cameraman Terry Fitzsimmons, and the technician Michael Zahir decide to examine the pyramid beforehand. Inside the pyramid, however, the team gets lost and finally breaks through the floor in a room. Michael is trapped and seriously injured. While trying to climb through a tunnel in the ceiling, Sunni is attacked by an animal. The team looks for help through another exit and leaves Michael behind. A little later they hear him scream and find only traces of blood from him. Sunni is pierced by spikes through a trap and attacked by the animals, which turn out to be Sphynx cats living in the pyramid. She dies from severe injuries caused by the spines.

Because of the labyrinthine structure of the pyramid, Dr. Holden that this was built to lock something inside. In parallel, the mycotoxin begins to poison the surviving team, causing necrosis of the skin. Outside the pyramid, Egyptian soldiers noticed the disappearance of the archaeologists. Corporal Shadid, who wants to help them, is dragged into a shaft by a large creature from which even the cats have fled. A little later, Dr. Holden abducted by this creature. Nora and Terry follow his trail and discover a hidden entrance. It leads into a hall and to the creature that is three meters tall and has a jackal head. She takes from Dr. Hold the heart and weigh it on a scale. Based on hieroglyphs in the cave, Nora suspects that it is the god Anubis who is trapped in the pyramid. They try to escape from the hall, but Anubis pursues them and kills Terry. Nora escapes when the cats attack Anubis. It collapses a few meters from the exit of the pyramid. She is later discovered by a boy who tries to take her camera away, causing Nora to wake up again. Nora's face is largely disfigured by the mycotoxin. Before she and the boy can escape from the pyramid, both are attacked by Anubis.

On July 7, 2014, 20th Century Fox secured the distribution rights to the film and announced the US theatrical release on December 5, 2014. In Germany, the film opened in cinemas on April 16, 2015. The film was then released as video-on-demand on April 17, 2015 , and was also released as direct-to-video on May 5, 2015 .

criticism

The film received mostly negative reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , 13% of reviews are positive out of a total of 40 reviews; the average rating is 2.7 / 10. The critical consensus states: "Poorly lit and thinly written, The Pyramid offers little more than wooden dialogue, amateur acting and dusty found-footage shockers." The Hollywood Reporter ruled the film was "a disappointment in every way". The film service described The Pyramid as a “stereotypical horror film” that “loses its protagonists in the barely lit glow of the wobbly camera”. The film is "also within the genre rather lower level".

Gross profit

The film was implemented with a budget of approximately 6.5 million US dollars and has so far achieved gross revenues of over 16 million US dollars.

The film was shown in 589 cinemas in North America and grossed only 1.3 million US dollars on the opening weekend. Contrary to the expectations of investors, who had expected box office earnings of over US $ 20 million in the domestic film market, the film grossed less than US $ 2.8 million in North America.

Outside of North America, the film was simultaneously released in 18 film markets, including the UK, Russia and Vietnam. The international box office income on the opening weekend was US $ 3.8 million.
