content

The student and otaku Naofumi Iwatani finds the “Treatise on the Arms of the Four Saints” in the library. When he tries to read it, he passes out and is drawn into the world of the book. He was summoned here by the king with three others to protect as one of the four heroes from great danger. But first he and the three others should explore the world and gain experience.

Naofumi only receives a shield as a weapon - the least popular of the four weapons, which is why none of the king's subjects wants to join him as a companion. Only the young Myne Suphia wants to accompany him. Naofumi uses the money he received for his mission to buy expensive armor. He is denied other weapons. And the fight against monsters is of little use to him, because he can hardly be wounded by the shield, but it is also difficult to kill monsters. Finally, his equipment is stolen overnight - by Myne Suphia, who accuses him of raping her in front of the king. Naofumi is cast out and now has to fight his way alone with his shield. He earns money collecting herbs and he succeeds in taming little monsters and making them fight for them. With the money he finally buys the slave Raphtalia, whom he also lets fight for himself and who soon becomes a companion for him.

Publications

The light novel was initially published online as a web novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō platform from 2012 . Later it was taken over by the Media Factory publishing house and published in 20 volumes so far. The publication as a web novel was discontinued in 2015. One Peace Books published the series in English and Tong Li Publishing in Chinese.

An adaptation of the book series as a manga by Aiya Kyu has been published in Gekkan Comic Flapper magazine by Media Factory since June 2014 . He has published the series in twelve anthologies so far. The seventh volume sold over 20,000 copies in Japan in the first week of its release. Anime

For 2019, the Kinema Citrus studio produced a 25-part anime series based on the light novel. Directed by Takao Abo and lead author was Keigo Koyanagi . The music for the series was composed by Kevin Penkin . The series was broadcast in Japan on January 9, 2019 and published via streaming on Crunchyroll , including German and English subtitles.

The first episode of the series was received largely negatively by the relevant media and, in addition to genre elements that were viewed as boring and worn out, was criticized as misogynistic because of the portrayal of the simulated rape. The anime, on the other hand, was a great success with the public and, thanks to its popularity, doubled the sales of light novel and manga series.

During the Crunchyroll Expo on September 1, 2019, it was announced that the anime will have both a second and a third season.

Video game

On April 27, 2019, a demo for the video game for Tate no Yūsha no Nariagari appeared in Japan , which was programmed with the help of the RPG Maker MV . An English version of the game will be released later this year. The finished game will appear at the end of September under the title The Rising of the Shield Hero: Relive the Animation on Steam for the PC and will be implemented as an Android and iOS version for the smartphone . An English-language version has been announced for autumn.

An unofficial video game related to the series is called Rise! Shield Hero! .

Play

A play based on the anime was scheduled to take place in Osaka between March 27 and March 2020 and then in Tokyo between April 2 and 12 of the same year , but the screenings were canceled due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and the related COVID-19 pandemic in Japan canceled and postponed indefinitely.

Yuya Uno and Karin Isobe play the roles of Naofumi Iwatani and Raphtalia in the performances. The other actors were announced at the end of November 2019.
