action

One day, while rummaging through the library, 20-year-old student Naofumi Iwatani found the "Chronicle of the Four Saints", which tells of four heroes with sacred weapons, a spear , a sword , a bow and a shield . When Naofumi opens the chapter on the hero of the shield, he is swooned into the world of the book.

In the new world, he wakes up alongside three other young men as the hero of the shield. The king has summoned the four holy heroes to save his kingdom from an approaching threat. Since the shield is the least popular weapon, nobody wants to join Naofumi as a companion. Only the adventurer Myne agrees to accompany Naofumi on his journey. Naofumi receives money to upgrade himself, with no weapons other than his shield. Fights against monsters are of little use to Naofumi, as he is hardly vulnerable due to his shield, but can also be difficult to defeat monsters.

Finally, Naofumi is robbed that night - by his companion Myne, who accuses him of attempted rape in front of King Aultcray . Thereupon Naofumi is expelled and from then on has to fight his way through the new world alone. He earns some money by collecting herbs and learns that he is able to tame little monsters and let them fight for them. With his money he buys Raphtalia, a slave from the half-men, whom he also lets fight for himself and who soon becomes an indispensable companion for Naofumi.
