The Secret Life of Machines is a television series created by Tim Hunkin . Tim Hunkin and Rex Garrod explain in how various household and office machines work and their history . Hunkin claims to have designed the series based on his comics The Rudiments Of Wisdom , which he researched and drew for the English newspaper The Observer over a period of 14 years . The series premiered on Channel 4 in the UK in 1988. It was later repeated on the Discovery Channel .

Overview

The series consists of three seasons of 6 episodes each, in which different types of machines are treated. Season 1 deals with household machines, Season 2 deals with everyday machines and Season 3 deals with office machines. Each season and a few episodes end with an epilogue , which consists of an elaborate installation and reflects an aspect of the machine or technology covered.

season 1

In the first season the vacuum cleaner , the sewing machine , the central heating , the washing machine , the refrigerator and the television are explained.

season 2

This season starts with a two-part series: the automobile and the internal combustion engine . The other episodes deal with the quartz watch , the telephone , the radio and the video recorder .

season 3

This season covers the elevator , the word processing system from which today's computers emerged , electric light (although this is of course also used in the home), the photocopier and the office building .

Tim Hunkin himself encourages downloading the series from file sharing sites or from Science Zero on his homepage . Remarkable excerpts and sometimes even complete episodes can also be found on YouTube .
