The Soul Survivors

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Soul Survivors was an American R&B group from Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . The formation was founded by the brothers Richie and Charlie Ingui and Kenny Jeremiah.

Band history

Although the band members were white, their first Crimson Records singles had a compelling R&B sound. The Soul Survivors' biggest hit was their debut Expressway to Your Heart . The song rose to number 4 on the American pop charts and number 3 on the R&B charts in September 1967 . The single was also the first chart success of the Philadelphia-based writer and producer duo Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff . The two processed in Expressway to Your Heart horns - and car - sound effects ; however, the main strengths of the song were the soulful voices and the pounding beat . The accompanying album When the Whistle Blows Anything Goes climbed to number 123 on the US album charts and number 25 on the R&B charts in November .

With the follow-up single Explosion in Your Soul , a second, albeit smaller, single hit followed in December. This time the top positions were 33rd on the pop and 45th place on the R&B charts. With the piece Impossible Mission (Mission Impossible) the success continued to decline. The single only reached number 68 on the pop charts. The album Take Another Look (1969) went unnoticed as well as its extracts. Thereupon the band split up.

1974 it came to the reunion of the group and it appeared the third studio album Soul Survivors . Only the release City of Brotherly Love was briefly placed in the R&B charts in September 1974 and came in at number 75. Other singles and the album missed the charts.
