The Wake was a Finnish melodic death metal band from Karjaa , which was founded in 1998 under the name Bleeding Harmony and split up in 2008.
history
The band was founded in 1998 under the name Bleeding Harmony by the brothers Sakari (electric guitar) and Harri Lempinen (drums). A little later the line-up consisted of the singer and bassist Kaj Michelsson, the guitarist Lauri Helenius and the drummer Harri Lempinen. In 2002 the band released a first demo . The group then reached a record deal with Spikefarm Records , whereupon the band name was changed to The Wake. At that time the line-up consisted of Michelsson and guitarists Jani Luttinen and Sakari Lempinen and drummer Wellu Helenius. The debut album followed in 2003 under the name Ode to My Misery , which was recorded and mixed in May and June of that year at SundiCoop Studios in Savonlinna with Tuomo Valtonen . The mastering was done by Mika Jussila in Finnvox Studios in Helsinki . The Japanese editions of the album contain the songs Here in Eternity and Deja-Vu as bonuses. In September 2004 we went on the "Spinetour" through Sweden , in which Finntroll and Norther also took part. In October of the following year, the second album, Death-a-Holic , followed, the Japanese version of which also contains a cover of the Iron Maiden song Be Quick or Be Dead . After Luttinen left the band to join The Scourger , the line-up was expanded in March 2006 to include guitarist Markus Ahlroth and bassist Juho Manninen. In 2008 the band broke up.
style
David from Metal.de found in his review of Ode to My Misery that it contained classic Melodic Death Metal in the Gothenburg style. Above all, parallels to At the Gates , In Flames and Dark Tranquility can be heard. There is also an American influence. On the album there are "[e] in-good melodies, quick riff attacks , unerring twin guitar runs, aggressive screeching vocals and driving drumming", but the group couldn't offer anything really original. Oliver Schneider from Powermetal.de saw it in his review of Death-a-Holic and wrote that you can hear Melodic Death Metal in the Swedish style, which is characterized by “two-part guitar runs, smooth solos , occasional Thrash riffs and aggressive vocals “Award. He also criticized a lack of originality, so that he would rather use Arch Enemy or The Duskfall .
