The Scourger is a Finnish thrash metal band from Helsinki that was formed in 2003.

history

The band was founded in Helsinki in 2003 by singer Jari Hurskainen, previously with Gandalf , and drummer Seppo Tarvainen. The electric guitar was initially played by Pekka Hämäläinen, a friend of Tarvainen. Together they designed the songs for a first demo. They recorded a first demo that was mixed by Tony Näykki . The demo also featured a cover of Cold from At the Gates .

In the spring of 2004 the band was working on new songs. In addition, the line-up of the band changed as the guitarists Harri Hytönen and Timo Nyberg, both of whom had previously worked for Gandalf, joined the band. A short time later, bassist Alec Hirst-Gee, who previously worked for Suburban Tribe , joined the cast. The band held their first live performance in the Nosturi Hall in Helsinki together with bands such as Amoral . In autumn, the band went to the Moonman Studios in Karis, Finland, with producer Aaro Seppovaara , who also worked in the stoner metal band Blake . Since bassist Hirst-Gee did not have time for the recordings, Kirka Sainio took over his part in the recordings. The EP To the Slayground was released in February of the following year. In 2004 they also played two concerts with Transport League , as well as Moonsorrow , Imperanon and Born of Thorns .

In 2005, appearances followed such as at the Finnish Metal Expo. Kimmo Kammonen was added as a new bass player this year. At the Finnish Metal Expo the band filmed their first music video, that for the song Slayground . The video is included on the Inferno: A Collection of Metal Videos 2005 DVD . After the EP To the Slayground was released in February, the band performed with Finntroll that same month . They then developed new songs, resulting in the single Hatehead , which was recorded at Seawolf Studios , Helsinki, and Moonman Studios, Karis. The single was released the week that the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival was taking place. The band played at the festival's aftershow party together with Hevein and Total Devastation . The single reached number one on the Finnish singles chart. In August and September the band continued recording their debut album Blind Date With Violence . Meanwhile, the line-up changed, with guitarist Harri Hytönen leaving the band and being replaced by Jani Luttinen. In October, a gig with Trivium followed , which was Jani Luttinen's first appearance. The rest of the year the band spent with other gigs.

The album was released in January 2006. In addition, a music video for the song Hatehead was created and appeared on the compilation DVD Inferno: A Collection of Metal Videos 2006 . Further gigs followed in March and April, including in Estonia in April. In May guitarist Jani Luttinen injured his hand, so that he had to take a break for two months. He was replaced by Antti Wirman for this period. In June the band signed a contract with the German label Cyclone Empire . In July, they performed at Tuska Open Air. After that, another single, Maximum Intensity , was released, which stayed in the Finnish top 5 for four weeks. In August, Cyclone Empire announced that Blind Date With Violence would be re-released worldwide in October. In addition to a new cover design, it included cover versions of Slayers Ghosts of War and Testaments Over the Wall . It also included two songs from the EP To the Slayground , The Greediness and Black Worms , as well as three live songs from the Tuska Festival. Further appearances followed in November and December, as well as work on another album.

In January 2007 the band was on the soundtrack to the Finnish film V2 - Jäätynyt enkeli alongside other artists such as Norther , Tarot , Thunderstone and Amorphis . This was followed by a tour through Scandinavia together with Napalm Death . Before the tour, drummer Tarvainen began recording a new album at Seawolf Studios. It was again produced by Aaro Seppovaara. The recordings continued from March to June. In May the title for the album was announced: Dark Invitation to Armageddon . The first single should be Never Bury the Hatchet . The single entered the charts at number nine and rose to number five within three weeks. The album was mixed by Pelle Saether at Studio Underground in Sweden . Due to delays in the mixing process, the release date was moved from October 2007 to January 2008. The rest of the year the band spent performing in Finland.

style

The band plays classic Thrash Metal, the music being comparable to the works of Carnal Forge .
