The War on Drugs is an American indie rock - band from Philadelphia , Pennsylvania .
history
The band was founded in 2005 by Adam Granduciel and Kurt Vile and named after the US government's "war on drugs" . In 2008 the first tracks were released on Secretly Canadian with the EP Barrel of Batteries and the album Wagonwheel Blues . After a European tour, Kurt Vile left the band at the end of 2008 to concentrate on his solo career. Further line-up changes within the band followed.
While The War on Drugs was still an insider tip after the second long player Slave Ambient , the album Lost in the Dream , released in 2014, received unanimous positive reviews from the critics. The group was declared the 'band of the hour' by the dpa .
In 2018 , the band was awarded a Grammy for A Deeper Understanding in the category " Best Rock Album ".
style
The band's musical style is repeatedly described as a mixture of traditional and modern. Inspired by American rock legends such as Bob Dylan , Tom Petty , Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young , the band has been praised for their contemporary Americana sound.
