The RambaZamba Theater in the Berliner Kulturbrauerei is an inclusive theater in which actors with and without disabilities perform professionally.

History and Theater Practice

RambaZamba was founded in 1990 as part of the Sonnenuhr e. V. founded by Gisela Höhne and Klaus Erforth , parents of a son with Down syndrome . Erforth was a director at the Deutsches Theater Berlin until 1990 , Gisela Höhne was an actress and theater scholar. Her son Moritz was the first member of the theater company that Höhne founded in 1991. He is still one of the main actors of the ensemble and has become an impressive drummer under the direction of Stefan Dohanetz. The actors are people with and without handicaps, often well-known Berlin theater personalities. The theater is financially supported by the Senate Chancellery for cultural affairs, Senate administrations for education, science and research as well as for integration, labor and social affairs , foundations and private and public sponsors.

The first play in the theater was Prinz Weichherz , directed by Höhne, based on a poem by the poet Georg Paulmichl . The sold-out premiere was given in 1991 at the Deutsches Theater Berlin. The RambaZamba theater initially consisted of two ensembles led by Höhne and Erforth, as well as the Sonnenstich children's circus . Since 2007, 30 actors have had jobs that enable them to turn their hobby into a profession. The workplaces are managed by VIA workshops, a workshop for people with disabilities. After 20 years together, Gisela Höhne was responsible for the entire artistic work from January 2010. In the middle of 2017 Jacob Höhne , the son of Höhne / Erforth, took over the management of the theater.

The actors' handicap is often creatively incorporated into the productions, but not as a defect, but as a strength: “In every piece I do, everyone should light up at least once.” The material comes from literature, mythology and contemporary topics and are processed into their own pieces in the samples. The actors are for example: Nele Winkler, the daughter of actress Angela Winkler , Zora Schemm and Juliana Götze , who has already been seen in various television series (Ensemble Höhne) or Jonas Sippel and Sebastian Urbanski. The RambaZamba theater, in particular the Gisela Höhne ensemble, has given guest performances throughout Germany and other European countries, including Portugal , Italy, France , the Netherlands , Denmark , Norway , Austria and Switzerland .

In 2004, the documentary film Liebe dich ... by Sylvie Banuls and Sabina Engel was released, which reports on the everyday life and theater work of the actors and members of Ensemble Höhne.

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Sundial / Theater RambaZamba 2010, the Höhne ensemble developed the open air spectacle Der Frieden - Ein Fest (based on Aristophanes), which was held in the courtyard together with the Polish street theater group Teatr Ósmego Dnia and the Israeli integrative group Kenafayim from Tel Aviv the Kulturbrauerei was performed in front of 3,000 spectators.

Quotes about the RambaZamba theater

  • "The only theater that does without a crisis of meaning." ( Frank Castorf )
  • “In a world in which everyday speed is determined by computers and perception is primarily realized through electronic media, SONNENUHR's work relies on archaic expressions of individuals. That they are different is their quality in the age of leveling. "( Heiner Müller )
