Theater im Keller (Graz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The theater in the basement , or TIK for short, is a theater in Graz . It focuses on unknown plays and authors, often with premieres or premieres. The ensemble likes to experiment with new texts and, according to its own statements, is an “experimental laboratory” for many pieces.

history

The TIK was founded in September 1951 from the amateur play movement of the "Spielvögel", a community of young people who tried out new texts and brought them to life. The aims of the work were also to deal with contemporary topics, community care and the involvement of the audience. The "play birds" called themselves the "rehearsal chamber of the Styrian youth" because there was close cooperation with young people and schools. A founding member of the “Spielvögel”, Harald Kopp , founded a publishing house in 1950, the “Steirischer Bühnenverlag”, which dealt with domestic and foreign authors. There was a large number of text books, which were not only available to the “play birds”, but to all other amateur theaters throughout Austria.

Another founding member, the now 80-year-old Liselotte Slippek, has been a member of the “Spielvögeln” since 1954 and is still regularly on stage in various productions. After several moves, the theater has had its permanent venue in Münzgrabenstrasse in Graz since 1973. These old rooms in the basement were a bell foundry and later a wine cellar before they were taken over by the theater . Especially in the 1990s, the TIK took the path towards professionalization. The chairman at the time, Norbert Hainschek, employed young directors such as Hansjörg Bader, Gogo Nachtmann, Reinhold Ulrych and Heinz Hartwig. Young talents were encouraged, so talented actors were given the opportunity to train as an actor at the TIK, which ended with the diploma examination before the joint examination committee in Vienna . Many actors played at TIK before they switched to other stages in Germany, such as Franz Morak , Martin Kušej or Wolfram Berger who started their careers at TIK.

The pieces by well-known and lesser-known national and international authors will be premiered or premiered by Wolfgang Bauer , Martin G. Wanko , Charles Bukowski .

Focus

With the major project “Unknown Neighbors” 1999–2003, the TIK set its focus on the South-Eastern European region. This project was included in the program of the cultural capital Graz 2003. Countless pieces from the neighboring countries Slovenia , Italy and Hungary were developed and premiered. At the same time, a playwright competition was held, which selected three winning pieces from the final jury with Matthias Fontheim as chairman. The premieres of the winning pieces from Slovenia, Italy and Hungary came in 2003 for the first time in TIK. The presentation of contemporary drama is a guideline of the theater.

Guest appearances

The "Spielvögel" of that time made guest appearances in their early years with various pieces abroad, for example in Korbach . In the past few years, TIK has been regularly invited to Kranj , Slovenia , for the International Week of Slovenian Theater.

TIK Graz celebrated its 60th anniversary in September 2011. Furthermore, it follows the line of researching and trying out new texts and thus addressing and working on current, social issues.
