Thee Hypnotics

Thee Hypnotics were a rock band from London .

history

The band formed in 1987 in High Wycombe . The band consisted of Jim Jones (vocals), Ray Hanson (guitar, later Craig Pike and Robert Zyn), Will Pepper (bass, 1987–1988 Chris Dennis) and Phil Smith (drums, 1987–1989 Mark Thompson). It was based on Detroit rock bands like The Stooges and MC5 and the tougher and more psychedelic rock groups of the 1960s and became popular in the underground in England in the wake of the emerging grunge wave in the late 1980s .

Radio DJ John Peel recorded a session with the band and the Sub Pop label released their debut LP in the United States. There they toured and were taken over by grunge and sub-pop producer Jack Endino , who produced their second LP Come Down Heavy , which was released on the major RCA label . Phil May and Dick Taylor of Pretty Things had guest appearances on this record . A serious car accident during the North American tour to promote the album resulted in a forced break. A year later the band released their third album Soul Glitter & Sin and brought in Craig Pike from Iggy Pop, a second guitarist, who died of an overdose in 1992 . A final release followed in 1994 with The Very Crystal Speed Machine , produced by Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson , which was released on Rick Rubin's label Def American . After this record did not bring the hoped-for breakthrough, the band broke up in 1994, played a few concerts in Europe at the end of the 1990s and then separated for good. Bassist Will Pepper switched to Hurricane No. 1 , Jim Jones founded Black Moses and has presented his Jim Jones Revue since 2006 .
