The Maintor (also Dettelbacher Tor ) is a characteristic gate of the former fortification of Sommerach on Lindenallee in the southwest of the village. Today the private Theo Steinbrenner Tower Museum is housed in the gate .

history

The fortifications on the Main side were built in the second half of the 16th century. The gate was built in 1585 by master stonemason Georg Holzwarth from Gerolzhofen . The community of Sommerach had to bear the costs, but the landlord, the Benedictine monastery Münsterschwarzach with the abbot at the time, Johannes IV. Burckhardt, took part.

The gate led to the Main ferry , which connected the place with Dettelbach and its pilgrimage church Maria im Sand . That is why the designation Maintor or Dettelbacher Tor prevailed. In 1831 a lightning strike destroyed the roof of the tower and the fire spread to the wooden structure of the gatehouse. The fire brigade was unable to extinguish the building due to the height of the gate, so it was built lower when it was rebuilt in 1585.

For a long time apartments were housed in the main gate, which the community rented cheaply as poor houses. Therefore the residents changed frequently. The Angermaier family lived there in 1916, and Heinrich Wilhelm moved in in 1919. The first renovation took place in 1934, when two intermediate walls were moved. During the National Socialist dictatorship, the Hitler Youth and the Association of German Girls held their meetings in the tower. After the Second World War , a family of five expellees lived there for a time . During an extensive restoration in 1984, a water pipe was also laid.

In 1985 the community signed a tenancy agreement with the freelance artist Theophil Steinbrenner for the continued use of the main gate for a period of 20 years. He set up a small private museum in the tower house with a permanent exhibition of his own works of art. There are also changing art exhibitions and cabaret evenings. The main gate is registered as a monument.

architecture

The main gate is a mighty gate that protrudes over the lower wall on the village side. The archway to the Main side , which is designed with hewn sandstone blocks, is particularly impressive . The top floor of the tower is highlighted by a cornice . The tower has only a few rectangular windows with a simple frame and a flat hipped roof . On the village side, a wooden staircase with a roof leads into the tower. On the village side above the archway, a Pietà had to be removed as a house figure in 1984. The simple work of art, which probably came from the 18th century, was largely destroyed by weathering. In 1988 it was replaced by a bronze Pietà by Theophil Steinbrenner.
