The Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium (THG) is one of three high schools in Dinslaken . It was named after the first Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany , Theodor Heuss .

The school is attended by 725 students in mostly four-tier grades or the classless qualification phase (EF, Q1, Q2). They are taught by a staff of 69 teachers (school year 2017/2018). Since the 2015/2016 school year, the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium has been based on the so-called Dalton principle .

history

Founded in 1901, today's grammar school was initially a rectorate school for boys. Due to lack of space, the school was initially spread across the city in different houses until it finally found its first home in what is now the Dinslaken District Health Office. The Realgymnasium was chosen as the school type . After completion of the new school building on Voerder Strasse on April 1, 1912, the school moved to its current location.

After the end of the First World War, the premises of the school were used by the Red Army as quarters; the years that followed passed without any special events.

The school was not spared from the Second World War either. When Dinslaken was bombed on March 23, 1945, the school buildings were almost completely destroyed along with the entire city center of Dinslaken. Even before that, regular teaching had been impossible due to the emerging war. Burdened by many tasks related to the reconstruction, the city administration was initially unable to take care of the reconstruction of the school, only after six months could lessons be resumed on October 29, 1945 in emergency shelters, destroyed classrooms and taverns. In 1948 two classrooms in the old building were again prepared so that they could be used; In 1949 and 1950 the gym and another classroom were completed. In 1953 the current old building was completely rebuilt and the school was able to use it.

In the 1970s, a new building was added, the current class wing. Some rooms in the old building could be converted and used for special purposes.

Another new building was completed in 1997. It offers space for science classes and is completed by an extension completed in 2001 with further, more modern rooms for biology, chemistry and physics and a small event room, the so-called forum. The rooms that became vacant in the old building were used, among other things, to set up a so-called SchaZ, student work center.

The school has had a cafeteria since 2011.

School life

In addition to normal school lessons, the THG also offers many working groups for learning foreign languages and other activities, such as a DELF AG (an AG in which students are prepared for the Delf exams), a Cambridge AG, and a dispute settlement AG, a musical AG, a theater AG, a school newspaper AG and an Israel AG, within the framework of which a regular student exchange with the Dinslaken partner city Arad (Israel) takes place. The THG offers various trips where the students can, for example, get in touch with partner schools in other countries. In addition, the ski project for the ninth grade takes place every year.

Every year there is a school concert shortly before the summer holidays, which is mainly performed by the school's own orchestra (since 1951) and the vocal practice course in grade 11. In addition, there are various activities of the vocal practice course and smaller ensembles from the orchestra, such as a Christmas concert in a smaller setting, spread over the year.

Dalton

Dalton is an educational concept developed by the American teacher Helen Parkhurst in a small town called Dalton in the early 20th century. This concept belongs to reform pedagogy and is similar to the Montessori concept . It is based on the principles of "freedom in bondage", "independent learning" and "cooperation". Dalton offers the students a varied everyday school life, which they can partly determine. The concept is intended to prepare them for future study and professional life, as independence has top priority.

At the beginning of each learning phase, which lasts five weeks, the students receive a learning plan in each subject, which sets tasks for the upcoming weeks. The pupils can decide with which teacher and in which hour they will work on the tasks. The Dalton lessons are offered daily in the third and sixth periods.

The THG is a member of the Dalton Association Germany eV (DVD) and organized the German Dalton Congress in Dinslaken in 2017.

Motto of the THG

The THG has a quote from Theodor Heuss as its motto, which reads: "The external freedom of the many lives from the internal freedom of the individual."
