The Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium (short THG Aalen ) is a general education high school with a scientific and a linguistic profile as well as a bilingual element . As one of the 44 model schools in Baden-Württemberg, it offers a 9-year path to the Abitur. The junior engineer academy and the student engineer academy provide special support for the scientific and technical area .

The THG has been a recognized UNESCO project school since October 2016 .

history

In 1961 the Aalen municipal council decided to build a second Aalen grammar school. Initially planned as a girls' school, it was decided in 1963 to build a mixed full high school and name it after the former Federal President Theodor Heuss, who died in 1963 . An architecture competition was called for the construction, in which Stribl and Horrer from Plochingen were able to prevail against 33 other offices. The construction cost around 6 million DM . The topping-out ceremony was held in 1964 . Lessons began on April 28, 1965, and the official inauguration took place on May 6, 1965.

Over 120 students attended the school in the opening year. As a novelty, a so-called B-train or assembly train was introduced, which enabled students with a secondary education to acquire the technical college entrance qualification within three years and to train as elementary school teachers. It was one of the first in Baden-Württemberg. This degree could be obtained until 1977.

In October 1966 the first Abitur examination was carried out. The first year consisted of 20 students who all passed the exam. In 1966 the school took part in the television program “Die 6 Siebeng'scheiten” and won the first prize there, a television set. In 1967 the first specialist rooms had to give way to new classrooms. In order to meet the space requirements, a former Zeiss administration building is rented as an alternative school building. In addition, a Progymnasium was set up, which later became known as the Kopernikus-Gymnasium Wasseralfingen .

In 1973 a language laboratory was set up. In 1974 a student exchange with St. Lô in France began, which has continued to this day . In 1975 the number of students reached its first maximum with 1068 students. In 1978 the reformed upper school was introduced. In the course of this, the building had to be expanded again. The new classrooms were inaugurated in September 1979. In 1986 a computer room was added with the outbuilding "Rosa Villa" . In 1987 a new sports hall was built, which was named after the strength athlete Karl Weiland .

In 1990, after the ceremony for the 25th anniversary of the school, plans to renovate, improve noise protection and redesign the schoolyard began. In 1994 the scientific train started after participating in the school experiment “ Natural Phenomena ”. In 1995, a compulsory internship was added, the so-called career and study orientation at grammar schools (BoGy), and the eight-year grammar school (G8) was introduced in Baden-Württemberg under Education Minister Annette Schavan . In 1998 a "turbo train" was introduced. However, the grammar school followed a two-pronged approach and until 2004 offered a choice between G8 and G9.

The bilingual profile was introduced in 2005 after a musical train was rejected by the Ministry of Culture. In 2006 an open all-day school was introduced. In this context, a new cafeteria was introduced, which was served by the Haus Lindenhof Foundation . In 2008, new high school subjects were introduced with the subjects of literature and theater. Since 2012, the school has been participating in the G9 pilot scheme as a model school and is again allowed to offer G8 and G9 options. In the same year, Spanish is established as a school subject.

In 2012 it was accepted into the procedure for recognition as a UNESCO project school. It was run as an interested school until 2014, then as a "cooperating UNESCO school" from 2014 and since 2016 it has been officially recognized.

In 2013, the school's business course was recognized by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Federal Association of German Banks as part of the nationwide “Youth and Business” competition. Newspaper articles were written as part of the project, a selection of which was printed in the business section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Around 60 schools took part in the competition.

In 2016, the THG took part in a workshop of the SWR Big Band .

Profiles

  • Linguistic profiles with the language sequence English / French / Spanish or English / Latin / Spanish.
  • Scientific profiles with the language sequence: English / French or English / Latin. The junior engineering academy or natural science and technology are available as a profile subject.
  • Bilingual train (English) with the international Abitur as a possible qualification.

particularities

Since the beginning of the grammar school as a girls' Progymnasium until today, but with a few interruptions, there has been a printed school newspaper called “Der Spion”. The edition for the 50th anniversary of the school contained a school chronicle and was 112 pages thick.

In 2000, the THG and the neighboring high schools founded the Student Engineering Academy (SIA), a cooperation with Aalen University . Südwestmetall , Kessler + Co, Kiener Maschinenbau, Mapal and SHW machine tools were won as partners . The THG was one of the first nine schools in Baden-Württemberg to tackle this project. Year 1 of all Aalen high schools initiates, plans and carries out a project that is located in the technical and natural sciences area.

After the grammar school between 1998 and 2004 was one of the few schools in the state of Baden-Württemberg that could offer G8 and G9 at the same time, this was no longer possible due to the school laws. In 2012, after a change in government, the school applied for a place in the G9 model experiment and was one of the 22 model schools in which freedom of choice was reintroduced. In the first year of the experiment, three classes were formed with G9 and only one with G8. Participation in the school trial ensures that the entrance classes are filled again. In 2014, the Junior Engineer Academy was also set up, a nationwide project by the Deutsche Telekom Foundation aimed at the intermediate level.

The school has been a UNESCO project school since 2016.
