Theodor Johannes Rudolf Büttner-Wobst (born January 24, 1854 in Dresden , † September 2, 1905 in Oberloschwitz near Dresden) was a German classical philologist . From 1877 until his death he worked as a teacher at the Dresden Kreuzschule .

Life

Theodor Büttner-Wobst was the eldest son of Karl Adolf Büttner-Wobst and Albine nee. Wobst. His father, a calculator in the court pay office, was a royal Saxon civil servant and died in 1874.

Theodor Büttner-Wobst attended the Böttcher private school and then from 1867 to 1872 the Kreuzschule Dresden. He remained connected with the rector Friedrich Hultsch all his life. From 1872 to 1875 Büttner-Wobst studied Classical Philology at the University of Leipzig . His academic teachers included Georg Curtius , Johannes Overbeck , Friedrich Ritschl and Ludwig Lange , whose Latin reading society he still belonged to after completing his studies. After completing his doctorate and the teaching degree, Büttner-Wobst did military service from October 1876 to October 1877.

On October 1, 1877, Büttner-Wobst started teaching at his old school, the Kreuzschule. He stayed there all his life. In 1897 he received the title of professor. From the spring of 1900 he suffered from a weak heart, which forced him to take frequent recreational trips. At Easter 1904 he retired barely 50 years old. The following year he died in the health resort of Oberloschwitz near Dresden and was buried in the Trinity cemetery.

In addition to his school service, Büttner-Wobst was scientifically active throughout his life. He associated with Alfred Fleckeisen , Otto Meltzer , Martin Wohlrab and Franz Poland , with whom he was related by marriage. For a long time he was also a member of the Dresden Historical Society, which he led shortly before his death.

In his scientific work, Büttner-Wobst concentrated on ancient and Byzantine historiography, especially on Polybios and Zonaras . He presented a five-volume edition with extensive indexes on Polybios. On behalf of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin, he published the epitomes of books 13 to 18 of the historical work of Zonara . Both editions were fundamental to the author's text design and remained in use long after his death. Many years of work on the Polybios Edition resulted in a wealth of palaeographic and historical individual studies, which Büttner-Wobst published in various magazines. His plan for a Polybios lexicon and a Polybios grammar did not materialize due to his early death.
