Theodor Bovet (born May 28, 1900 in Rome , † March 6, 1976 in Zurich ) was a Swiss neurologist and Christian marriage counselor .

Life

Bovet grew up in Zurich , studied medicine at the University of Zurich , married in 1921 and received his doctorate there in 1928. He was raised without a denomination and began to become a Christian in the 1930s. After completing his doctorate, he worked for 20 years as a neurologist, then as a marriage counselor in Zurich, Lausanne and Basel. He founded in 1949 and headed the Protestant marriage counseling center in Zurich. From 1955 he was a member of the commission for bridal courses of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Basel-Stadt . Bovet founded the Christian Institute for Marriage and Family Studies in Basel in 1960 and, after its dissolution in 1967, the Institute for Marriage and Family Studies in Zurich and was the editor of the journal EHE , the central paper for marriage and family studies .

In the 1950s, Bovet and the German CDU politician Gustav Adolf Gedat supported homosexuals who fled to Switzerland from West Germany before they were arrested.

Bovet lived in Riehen , later in Zurich. In 1960 he received an honorary doctorate from the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich.

Teaching

With his conception of marriage studies as a scientific and theological doctrine of marriage, he contributed to the change in attitudes . The themes of his numerous works, which have been translated into several languages, were the relationship between men and women under the aspects of sex, eros and agape as well as the education about homophilia. He was violently attacked by conservative-Puritan circles, which sparked controversy and put him and his issue at the center. There were also positive comments from church representatives both on Bovet himself and on the question of homophilia.
