Theodor Feldmann

Theodor Feldmann (born December 5, 1891 in Vienna , † May 4, 1957 in New York City ) was an Austrian popular educator , radio journalist, writer, Viennese librarian and New York bookseller.

Life

Theodor Feldmann worked for a number of years as an authorized signatory in a large Viennese textile company. In addition, he was interested in literature and theater. In 1926 he took over the management of the literary specialist group at the Volkshochschule Ottakring founded by Josef Luitpold Stern . He expanded the extensive special library of the literary specialist group considerably. He gave numerous lectures that could be heard on the radio of RAVAG . His lectures at the adult education center and the library he put together in it had a lasting influence on authors such as Alfons Petzold , Fritz Hochwälder and Ernst Waldinger , for whom he also designed a first broadcast on the radio. He has written reviews and articles for a number of magazines and newspapers, including a. about Alexander von Villers , Georg Heym and Ernst Barlach . In 1933 he became a member of the Association of Socialist Writers .

With the help of the American Guild for German Cultural Freedom , he managed to escape to the USA in 1939 , where his wife, the writer Anna Feldmann, b. Peikert followed. In New York he became a successful bookseller and antiquarian for German-language books. Theo Feldman Books was at 609 West 114th Street. During the Second World War he was one of the most important suppliers of contemporary or rare German-language books for American university libraries. He organized the holdings of the Kretzschmar von Kienbusch Germanic Collection at Princeton University and a significant part of the German Literature Collection at Yale University . The Theo Feldmann Papers , an extensive collection of manuscripts and the bookseller's correspondence with a large number of Austrian and German authors are located in the New York Public Library . Theodor Feldmann was, like Oskar Maria Graf , whom he still knew from Vienna and from the Association of Socialist Writers , was a member of the German-American Writers Association .
