Franken studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1829 to 1831 . The portrait painter Heinrich Christoph Kolbe in particular was his teacher there. From 1831 he exhibited in Düsseldorf, where he made his debut with a self-portrait.

Before 1841 he married into the family of Franziska Kux (1808-1891). In 1841 he and her family sold the "Deuzerhof" in Bilk . The picture Die Dorfpolitiker vividly describes a scene that could be located in this location . Around 1844 they lived on Bolkerstraße 565. This house probably became the address Alleestraße 23 on the corner of Communicationsstraße (Bolkerstraße) in the 1850s, where his wife and her sister Helene ran the Kux siblings' cleaning and fashion shop . Theodor Franken remained in Düsseldorf until his death in 1876 and worked as a genre painter.
