Theodor Möbius

August Theodor Möbius (born June 22, 1821 in Leipzig , †  April 25, 1890 ibid) was a German Scandinavian and Germanic Medievalist . He was a professor at the universities of Leipzig and Kiel .

Career

Möbius was the son of the mathematician and astronomer August Ferdinand Möbius . His younger brother was the educator Paul Möbius .

Theodor Möbius grew up on the Pleißenburg , where the old Leipzig observatory was located, which his father was then head of as an observer . After attending the Nikolaischule he studied classical philology, 1840–42 in Leipzig, 1843/44 in Berlin . He received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1844, where he also passed his state examination. From 1845 to 1861 he was an assistant and later curator at the Leipzig University Library . His habilitation (1852) was followed in 1859 by being appointed associate professor. In 1865 he finally accepted a call to Kiel.

Möbius understood Nordic philology as part of German studies . His fields of activity also included ancient German studies and the ancient English language and literature. He devoted a large part of his work to editing Old Norse texts. He also published an Old Norse-German dictionary.
