Theodor August Ludwig Pixis (born July 1, 1831 in Kaiserslautern , † July 19, 1907 in Pöcking ) was a German painter and draftsman, illustrator and etcher .

After graduating from high school in 1849 at the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich , he began studying law, which he soon broke off in favor of art. He became a student of the painters Philipp von Foltz and Wilhelm von Kaulbach and made his debut in 1854 at an exhibition with his work Coriolanus .

With the support of his teachers, Pixis went to Italy for two years in 1856. There he studied the ancient masters in Rome, among other places, and was enthusiastic about the landscape. In the autumn of 1858 he returned to Germany and settled in Munich. One of his first major works after his return was a cycle of illustrations for the Gudrun legend .

From 1859 Pixis was instrumental in decorating the Bavarian National Museum . At the request of King Maximilian II , he created three wall paintings from the history of Charles X and Charles XI by 1861.

From 1862 onwards, many pictures - highly praised by the critics - were created in quick succession, such B. Calvin at Servet in prison , a cycle on German folk songs or enjoyment of nature . Pixis created three pictures for Bruckmann-Verlag in Munich for its “Schiller Gallery” and four depictions of the seasons. He illustrated the Lost Paradise by John Milton as well as a portfolio of Wagner-Galerie .

Like Wilhelm Busch , Fritz Schwörer and other artists, he belonged to the Jung-München association and was also its association president. From 1863 until his death he was a member of the casual society in Munich .

At the request of King Ludwig II , Pixis created a series of pen drawings for Richard Wagner's musical dramas . Here he proved himself to be a master student of his teachers, especially Wilhelm von Kaulbach. His large oil paintings, on the other hand, show more the influence of Arthur von Ramberg's elegant and sentimental style .

In addition to his artistic work, Pixis also became known for the invention of the Pixis patent painting. With this process, which was superseded by simpler methods after a few years, oil paintings (old and new masters) could be reproduced with the help of photography.

Theodor Pixis died on July 19, 1907 in Pöcking at the age of 76.
