Theodor Presuhn
Theodor Heinrich Christian Presuhn, also called Theodor Presuhn the Elder , (born October 22, 1810 in Oldenburg , † March 14, 1877 ibid) was a German painter. His focus was on oil and watercolor paintings with motifs from his homeland, the Oldenburger Land .
Life
Presuhn was the son of master tailor Johann August Presuhn and his wife Gesche Margarethe geb. Schlemmer. He completed an apprenticeship as a painter in Oldenburg and then went on a journeyman's hike , during which he worked for a theater painter in Karlsruhe for a long time . On May 1, 1834 he was appointed as the first full-time decorative painter to the theater in Oldenburg , which was founded in 1833 . He began his activity in the same year and designed a hall for the 4th act of the play The Forest near Sibiu. At first Presuhn had difficulties adjusting to the relatively small dimensions of the Oldenburg theater's stage. However, he quickly adapted to the conditions of his new job and the artistic director Ludwig Starklof soon praised Presuhn's speed and skill.
In addition to his work for the theater, Presuhn was also a sought-after vedute painter , a form of painting that had enjoyed increasing popularity since the end of the 18th century. One of his best-known works is a series of city views of Oldenburg, which also aroused great interest at the grand ducal court and were given away to family members who lived away from them, together with views of the interior of the castle. The Oldenburg bourgeoisie also had their interiors captured in pictures by Presuhn, who mainly worked with the gouache and watercolor technique.
family
Presuhn married Elisabeth Franziska Auguste born in 1840. Müller (1817–1898) from Karlsruhe. The couple had nine children, almost all of whom were artistically gifted. The son August Presuhn (1841–1879) trained as a lithographic draftsman and watercolor painter . After a long stay in Italy and Switzerland, he joined a lithographic institute in Graz in 1868 , which he later took over. His brother Theodor (1854-1884) first apprenticed with him and then studied at the art academies of Berlin and Karlsruhe, where he became a master student of Ferdinand Keller . For his book illustrations, he often chose motifs from the Oldenburg region. He is also known as Theodor Presuhn the Younger . The youngest daughter Helene (1857–1945) became a drawing teacher in Oldenburg and held private painting courses.

Presuhn's extensive artistic oeuvre, mainly his diverse Oldenburg views, is still popular today, for example as a postcard motif and in the program of some art print shops. The State Museum for Art and Cultural History Oldenburg showed 2010/2011 in the exhibition Welcome and Farewell room pictures and vedute by Theodor Presuhn.
