Theodor Vernaleken (born January 28, 1812 in Volkmarsen , † February 27, 1907 in Graz ) was a German philologist, folklorist, educator and seminar director and professor in Vienna.

life and career

After attending school in Warburg , Paderborn and Fulda , he studied in Zurich , and then became a secondary teacher in Rickenbach SZ at the teachers' college there. From 1840 he was an educational writer in Zurich.

From 1850 he was appointed seminar director in Vienna. In this function he contributed to the renewal of the Austrian elementary school system, the creation of realistic middle schools and teacher training. At first he also worked as a teacher for German language and literature at the pre-school of the Polytechnic, then at the Oberrealschule Schottenfeld. He then became a school inspector and examination commissioner. In 1870 he became director of the main normal school St. Anna of the kuk Reichs and kuk professor.

Vernaleken founded the first teacher training institute. After his retirement in 1877 he lived in Graz. Vernaleken was friends with Jacob Grimm , Johann Ludwig Uhland and Johann Wurth .

Act

In addition to his work as a teacher and school reformer, he collected legends, myths, fairy tales and customs from the Alpine countries, which he published in numerous books. He also wrote two grammar books on the German language and published a three-volume literature book.
