Theodor Viehweg
Theodor Viehweg (born April 30, 1907 in Leipzig , † July 29, 1988 in Mainz ) was a German legal scholar (legal philosophy and sociology).
Life
Viehweg was born in 1907 in Leipzig as the son of the lawyer Eugen Viehweg and his wife Elisabeth Viehweg, née Zweinert. He attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig until 1925 . He then studied law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , the University of Leipzig and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . In 1934 he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD. He then worked as an assistant at the Academy for German Law in Munich. In 1953 he completed his habilitation and taught as a private lecturer at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . In 1959 he became an adjunct professor and, in 1966, a full professor of legal philosophy and sociology in Mainz. In 1972 he retired.
Together with Rudolf Laun , he re-founded the scientific journal Archive for Legal and Social Philosophy (ARSP) in 1949 . The work Topik und Jurisprudenz comes from him, first published in 1953 . It was published in five editions up to 1974 and is considered to be trend-setting in the legal methodology of the post-war period. Together with Ottmar Ballweg, Viehweg is considered to be the most important representative of the Mainz School , a branch of legal rhetoric .
