Theodor Wertheim (born December 25, 1820 in Vienna , † July 6, 1864 in Vienna) was an Austrian chemist.

Life

Wertheim first studied medicine and went to Eilhard Mitscherlich in Berlin before completing his studies . There he dealt with the then still young organic chemistry . In 1843 Wertheim returned to Austria to work for Josef Redtenbacher . There he carried out analytical studies of what he called volatile garlic oil in 1844 in order to determine the sulfur-containing compounds it contained. He succeeded in isolating diallyl sulfide (C 6 H 10 S) and demonstrated that garlic oil was closely related to mustard oil. He succeeded in isolating the allyl isothiocyanate (C 4 H 5 NS) contained in mustard oil and converting both compounds into one another.

Despite his widely acclaimed work, he was denied a professorship in Austria due to his Jewish faith, but in 1848 he was appointed a corresponding member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences . He was baptized after his father's death and was eventually called to Pest University . He worked there from 1854 to 1860. Eventually he had to leave Hungary, since from 1860 all lectures had to be given in Latin. He then moved to the University of Graz in 1861 . There he tried very hard to improve the quality of the laboratory equipment, but this failed because of the low number of students.

Because of his research, the allyl group got its name, which is derived from the Latin name for garlic ( Allium sativum ).
