Therese Rie
Therese Rie , born as Therese Herz (born January 1, 1878 in Vienna ; † July 23, 1934 ibid), was an Austrian writer , journalist and music critic.
Live and act
Born as the daughter of the Viennese pediatrician Maximilian Herz and raised in the educated milieu of the secularized Jewish bourgeoisie, Therese Rie began working as a journalist soon after her marriage (1901 to the Prague businessman Kurt Rie). She wrote opera and theater reviews for the Austrian magazine Der Merker as well as for the Vossische Zeitung . She was well acquainted with the composer Hans Pfitzner , whose Palestrina text book she contributed to.
After the birth of her son Robert (* 1904; † 1981 in the USA, where he emigrated in 1938) and the death of her husband († 1908), she began to publish independent works of fiction, starting with the short story collection The Eyes of Hieronymus (1905 ). She used the pseudonym "L. Andro ", later mostly in the vented form" L. Andro (Therese Rie) ”.
Therese Rie has published a total of six novels, plus several volumes of short stories and essays. Thematic focus is on the one hand the lives of artists, for example in the actor novel comedian Dora X from 1920 and in the singer novel Vox Humana (which traces the career of the opera singer Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient ) from 1928, on the other hand fantastic subjects, for example in the detective novel Das I vanished from 1924 and the werewolf novella Das Tier im Walde (1928; magazine publication 1925).
Therese Rie has also translated works by Romain Rolland and Henri Barbusse from French, among others .
