description
The Thessalian chess flower is a perennial , herbaceous bulb plant that reaches heights of 15 to 45 centimeters. The leaves measure up to 10 × 5 centimeters and are green. The top 3 leaves are lively. The nectar glands measure 4 to 6 × 3 to 6 millimeters and are egg-shaped.
The flowering period extends from April to May.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
Occurrence
The Thessalian chess flower occurs in south-east Albania, Macedonia and Greece. It grows on subalpine meadows and conifer forest clearings on limestone and serpentine at altitudes of 10 to 2300 meters.
