Thilo Ulbert

Thilo Ulbert (born June 20, 1939 in Augsburg ) is a German Christian archaeologist .

After graduating from high school in Augsburg in 1959, Thilo Ulbert studied Christian archeology, prehistory and classical archeology at the universities of Munich and Freiburg from the winter semester 1959/60 . In 1966 he received his doctorate in Freiburg under Johannes Kollwitz .

From 1967 to 1968 he worked at the Madrid Department of the German Archaeological Institute . During this time he examined and documented the ruins of the early Christian churches of El Germo near Espiel and Casa Herrera near Mérida . From 1969 to 1971 he was an assistant at the University of Bochum , from 1971 to 1974 as part of a DFG project at the University of Munich (excavations in Vranje near Sevnica and Hrušica , Slovenia ). In 1975 he received his habilitation at the University of Munich for early medieval archeology of the Mediterranean region and was appointed professor there in 1983.

From 1975 he was a consultant for Christian archeology at the headquarters of the German Archaeological Institute and from 1976 headed the German excavations in Resafa in northern Syria . From 1988 to 1994 he was head of the Damascus branch of the Orient department of the German Archaeological Institute and from 1994 until his retirement in 2004 he was director of the Madrid department of the German Archaeological Institute. During this time, from 1997 to 2000, he carried out excavations in the early Christian complex of Son Fadrinet ( Campos , Mallorca). From 2001 to 2003 he devoted himself to the complete documentation of the early Christian basilica of Valdecebadar ( Olivenza ).

Thilo Ulbert is the younger brother of the Provincial Roman archaeologist Günter Ulbert .
