Thomas Antonic (born May 29, 1980 in Bruck an der Mur ) is an Austrian literary scholar , author and musician living in Vienna and San Francisco and a founding member of the transnational and interdisciplinary artist collective William S. Burroughs Hurts, founded in 2009 .

Literary studies

In the field of literary studies, his main research interests are German-language literature of the 20th and 21st centuries as well as transnational and postnational literary theories. At the Institute for German Studies at the University of Vienna , Antonic has been working on a research project about the Austrian playwright Wolfgang Bauer since 2008 . Since 2014, he has also carried out a research project at the Department of German Studies at the University of California at Berkeley on transnational relationships between the authors of the American Beat Generation and German-language literature and culture. Since 2017 he has headed the research project Transnational Literature - The Beat Generation and Austria (FWF) at the Institute for German Studies at the University of Vienna. So far he has published numerous scientific articles, two monographs and is the editor of texts from the estate of Wolfgang Bauer ( Der Geist von San Francisco , 2011, with a foreword by Elfriede Jelinek , and Der Rüssel , 2015) as well as the works of the Viennese writer, actor and Performance artist Joe Berger . A biography of the beat poet Ruth Weiss , authorized by the artist, is in the making.

As a literary scholar, Antonic also commented on copyright problems, for example in the case of Thomas Brunnsteiner , for whom he wrote an expert opinion , against Urs Mannhart . Antonic claimed in his analysis that Mannhart's novel Bergsteiger im Flachland with its loan from Brunnsteiner's reportage volume Bis ans Eismeer was a clear and serious case of plagiarism. Mannhart's publisher Joachim von Zepelin, on the other hand, described this report as a "friendship service" for Brunnsteiner, with which Antonic deceived science and readers. The commercial court in Zurich also came to the conclusion on July 22, 2015 that there was no copyright infringement and no plagiarism. Brunnsteiner then had to withdraw his lawsuit in a settlement and undertake to pay 20,000 Swiss francs in damages to the Mannharts publishing house. Antonic defended himself against these allegations in the daily newspaper Der Standard .

Writers and musicians

Since 1997 he has been active as a musician, especially as a composer, lyricist, drummer, keyboardist and singer, in various music groups. As a writer, he appeared for the first time around 2005 with smaller publications in anthologies and literary magazines. In 2009 he founded the artist collective William S. Burroughs Hurts together with the Finnish artist Janne Ratia , which is active in several artistic fields. One of the goals of the collective is to operate collaborations in which genre boundaries, national boundaries and individual boundaries are crossed. For example, with the participation of several artists from several countries, works of art are created that contain music, film, text and visual arts. In addition to Antonic and Ratia, other artists are always involved in the projects and are members of the collective for shorter or longer periods. The American musician and producer Kramer, for example, worked with the collective and has so far produced all of the group's recordings.

In 2013, the group also produced the debut novel The Bear in a Rabbit's Skin , which Antonic wrote together with Ratia and for which the Finnish-Austrian artist Tina Raffel contributed twelve drawings. The book was written in English by Antonic and Ratia and translated into German by Antonic. It also includes a soundtrack of songs by William S. Burroughs Hurts . In 2014 the second book was published with the title JOE: 9/11 . Antonic also publishes literary texts in anthologies and literary magazines.
