Thomas Bärsch

Thomas Bärsch (born December 8, 1963 in Zittau ) is a German journalist and publicist . He was editor-in-chief of the Thuringian General . Before that he worked as a Russia correspondent for the Sächsische Zeitung and the Berliner Zeitung and worked as the managing editor of the Sächsische Zeitung.

Professional background

He studied at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations from 1984 to 1990 and graduated with a degree in political science. He then worked as an editor and local manager in various editorial offices of the Sächsische Zeitung and in 1996 went to Moscow as a correspondent for this newspaper and the Berliner Zeitung . In 1998 he became head of the news department at the Sächsische Zeitung in Dresden and in 2000 he was on duty . From 2001 he was the managing editor.

Between 2010 and 2014 he worked as a freelance consultant, lecturer and publicist. Among other things, he taught at the Institute for Communication Studies at the Technical University of Dresden and at the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences .

During this time, Bärsch devoted himself intensively to reader research. He was part of the development team for the "Reading value" research project and was responsible for the editorial offices and readers taking part in the measurements.

In the spring of 2014, the then editor-in-chief of Thüringer Allgemeine, Paul-Josef Raue , appointed him to Erfurt , where he has been deputy editor-in-chief ever since. After Raue's transition into retirement, he was the editor-in-chief of the newspaper from October 2015 to May 2016. As the successor to Raue, Johannes M. Fischer, until then editor-in-chief of the Lausitzer Rundschau , joined Thüringer Allgemeine in May 2016 . On August 22, 2018, the Funke Mediengruppe announced that Jan Hollitzer will be the new editor-in-chief of Thüringer Allgemeine from November 1, 2018. In the period before Hollitzer took office, Thomas Bärsch was once again at the helm of the editorial team.

He lives in Erfurt.

Bärsch has been writing satirical columns regularly since 2009. In the Sächsische Zeitung from 2009 to 2016, the weekly column "What should that be?" Since 2016 he has been writing the column "Herr Bärsch explains ..." in the Thüringer Allgemeine on Saturdays. From 2011 to 2016 he appeared in the satirical quintet together with Michael Bittner , Wolfgang Schaller ( Die Herkuleskeule ), Jens-Uwe Sommerschuh and Peter Ufer .
