Thomas Beth
Thomas Beth (born November 16, 1949 in Hanover ; † August 17, 2005 in Karlsruhe ) was a German mathematician who dealt with computer science and combinatorics .
Live and act
Thomas Beth studied mathematics (as well as physics and medicine) at the University of Göttingen from 1968 to 1973 . He then received a DAAD scholarship at Ohio State University in 1973/74 and from 1974 research assistant at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg , where he received his doctorate in mathematics in 1978 under Konrad Jacobs . In 1984 he qualified as a professor there in computer science and in 1984 a professor at the Royal Holloway College of the University of London , where he was head of the faculty of computer science and statistics and a cryptography built workgroup. In 1985 he became a professor at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) , where he was co-founder (and spokesman) of the Institute for Algorithms and Cognitive Systems . In 1988 he was the founder and head of the European Institute for System Security (EISS) and organized international cryptography conferences in Burg Feuerstein early in 1982 , from which the Eurocrypt conferences later emerged.
In his habilitation, Beth dealt with Fourier transformation algorithms and then with methods of digital signal and image processing with applications, for example in medicine. After that, he mainly dealt with cryptography and most recently with quantum informatics , for which he initiated a priority program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and led a working group. He also initiated a new interdisciplinary research area in anthropomatics at the intersection of medicine, sociology and computer science.
