Thomas Cranz (also Thomas Kranz * 1785 or 1786 in Neisse , Silesia ; † 24. June 1853 in Cologne ) was a German artist of Romanticism .

Live and act

Very little is known about Cranz's life stages. In 1825 he created his city views of Aachen . In collaboration with Adolph Wegelin , who painted the Cranz drawings with watercolors , he created drawings of Cologne, cityscapes and individual sights in 1840. Anton Wünsch, G. Böhm, Ph. Koppel, among others, created their lithographs based on his drawings .

Aachen city views

The 19 drawings by Cranz with city views of Aachen and Burtscheid were included in a book bearing the initials L.R. carries, kept. Cranz made these sheets around 1825. At that time he was in Aachen and moved from one sight to the next with pencil and paper. Peter Ludwig Kühnen reported that some of the sheets were lithographed by Alois Senefelder , the inventor of lithography in Paris . In 1897 J. Fey was told that a publication by La Ruelle Verlag was planned for 1825.

The sheets by Cranz were an enrichment of the Aquensia collection in the Museum Burg Frankenberg in 1982 . They documented the drawing art of Romanticism at the beginning of the 19th century. It was a donation from Johanna Reuters from Cologne, which was acquired in 1981.

style

Cranz grasped the characteristics of the architecture. His art of washing set specific accents. The initially active repoussoir figures take the place of the viewer in his later works.

reception

In 1830 Jacob Gaiser painted the view of the city of Coeln after Thomas Cranz. The picture from Color Aquatint has the format 36 × 58 cm.
