Joseph Carl Cogel (1827)

Joseph Carl Cogel , also: Cogels ; Kogel (born November 5, 1785 in Brussels , † May 31, 1831 in Leitheim near Donauwörth ) was a landscape , vedute and marine painter .

Live and act

Born in Brussels, the son of a prefectural council of the French administration of the Département de la Roer lived in Aachen . Cogel completed his art studies first in Aachen and from 1802 in Düsseldorf with Ernst Carl Thelott at the Electoral Palatinate Academy of Painters, Sculpture and Architecture and later in Paris . He worked as a drawing teacher at the court of Duke Wilhelm von Bayern-Birkenfeld . In 1811 the 26-year-old came to Munich through the mediation of Max Graf von Lamberg . His clients there were, among others, King Maximilian I and Duke von Leuchtenberg . A stay in Ghent and Antwerp followed . After the monarchs' congress brought him back to Aachen in 1818 , he moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1824 .

During a visit by the later Supreme Court Marshal Friedrich Ludwig Camil Marquis de Montperny, Cogel died at the Danube Castle in Leitheim .

In his paintings he dealt with, among other things, maritime themes and cityscapes. There is a graphic by the artist in the Georg Schäfer Museum .

Schimper Castle

The ruins of the castle Schimper , a former and above the Geul lying hilltop castle , was due to the romantic flow in the 19th century a popular subject.

In his treatise on Schimper Castle, Hans Königs refers to a lithograph by the landscape painter Joseph Carl Cogel from 1818:

“The artist places the castle in an atmospheric, richly moved landscape. Right next to a jagged limestone cliff, it rises from the valley floor. "
“A gaping gap in the wall opens up a view of the older Gothic part of the castle house from the roof to the cellar vault. Details have been carefully observed, even if the size of the deep well in front of the hall is likely to be overemphasized. "
"In the background to the north under a slate conical dome rises the slender, semicircular mountain frieze, connected by a wall to the narrow eastern side of the Palas."
"If there are already slight signs of deterioration on the slate roof of the 17th century extension wing, its structure is still fully preserved."

style

Joseph Carl Cogel combined Dutch with contemporary German art. Material illusion and a wealth of detail, sophisticated lighting and light effects were his own.

Cogel preferred areas that were flat or crossed by canals as motifs for his pictures. There are often bridges, castles and cities in the background in his works.

Sometimes he reproduced his depictions as etchings or lithographs himself. The copperplate engravings for the city views of Aachen and Burtscheid are by Ernst Carl Thelott (1760 Augsburg – 1834 Düsseldorf).
