Thomas Doughty (born July 19, 1793 in Philadelphia , † July 22, 1856 in New York ) was an American painter from the Hudson River School .

Doughty was the first American artist to paint exclusively landscapes and was successful because of his skill and because Americans turned to landscapes. He was known for his calm and often atmospheric landscapes of rivers and mountains of Pennsylvania , New York , New England and especially the Hudson River Valley. He learned to paint in self-study while he was an apprentice at a leather manufacturer. In 1827 he was elected to the National Academy of Design as an Honorary Academician .

He worked mainly in Philadelphia, but also lived and worked in Boston and New York.
