Ernsting is a self-taught photographer . At the beginning he devoted himself exclusively to reportage photography and from the beginning worked worldwide for the various editions of GEO , but also published regularly in Stern , Merian and - since the magazine was founded - also in National Geographic Germany .

Ernsting avoids thematic specialization in his work; the topics of his reports are very diverse. Previous topics were, for example: the life of old peasant women, everyday life in the South Seas, the emotional life of plants, paleoanthropologists in Africa, the collapse of communism, shamanism in Germany, children of war in Yugoslavia, the drug scene in Germany or the Khasi in Meghalaya. Ernsting has received the World Press Photo Award four times for this alone . Well over 100 photo reports appeared in the major magazines worldwide. In 1996 he was accepted into the Art Directors Club New York . Ernsting is a member of the Laif agency (Cologne).

At the end of the 1990s, another focus was added with technical, industrial and scientific photography. His approach, always combining the representation of technology with people, sets the style.

Major projects in this area include: construction of the new Gotthard tunnel , creation of the Columbus space laboratory, development of the Bugatti Veyron , research by the Fraunhofer Society , work by the German Aerospace Center , Germany as a high-tech location. In addition to the magazines, Ernsting also works for companies such as Airbus , Siemens , Volkswagen and General Motors .
