Thomas Faist

Thomas Faist (born December 22, 1959 in Wolfach ) is a German sociologist .

life and work

Thomas Faist did community service from 1978 to 1980, took part in an academic exchange program with Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, from 1981 to 1982 , and worked there in the office of Congressman Harold Ford sr. From 1983 to 1986 he coordinated the training program working group for foreign workers in Tübingen . He completed his studies in 1986 with a Magister Artium at the University of Tübingen .

From 1990 to 1992 he advised the Manpower Development Research Corporation in New York on issues of professional training in Germany and in 1992 received a PhD in political science from the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research in New York.

From 1992 to 1999 he worked at the University of Bremen , among other things as a research assistant, private lecturer and professor of political science. From 2000 to 2004, he set up the international political management course at the University of Bremen . He completed his habilitation in 1999 at the University of Bremen.

In 2003 he became a member of the board of trustees of the German Institute for Public Affairs (DIPA). Since October 2004 he has been Professor of Transnational Relations and Development Sociology at Bielefeld University . Faist held several visiting professorships, including a. at Malmö University in Sweden and at the University of Toronto in Canada.

His research focuses on international migration , integration of ethnic and national minorities , citizenship , social policy and development policy .

Faist is a member of the Migration Council . In 2020 he was elected to the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .

Faist has been involved in several research projects, including projects of the German Research Foundation and the European Union, has published numerous scientific articles, is the author of several English and German-language books and the editor of numerous volumes.
